locusplus

We are pleased to announce the first Locus+ Archive open day and hope that you might be able to join us there.  The Archive is based at the University of Sunderland and is the largest archive of time-based art work in the UK.

The Locus+ Archive (incorporating material from the Basement Group and Projects UK) forms a comprehensive historical overview of time-based work  from the 1970s to the present, covering artists’ projects from a variety of British and international contexts. Consisting of approximately 16 000 photographic images, and over 300 hours of raw and edited video material, the Locus+ Archive is one of Europe’s largest repositories of documentation of time-based work.

On the same evening you are also invited to the private view of Alastair MacLennan/ Drawings

Tuesday November 10th, Reg Vardy Gallery, Ashburne House, 6pm – 8pm

In 2008, Alastair MacLennan, one of Britain’s major practitioners in live art, expressed his desire to bequeath his entire archive to the custodianship of the Locus+ Archive, based at the University of Sunderland. The Archive is an extensive record of his practice, featuring thousands of transparencies as well as original works on paper.  A selection of this drawing work is now exhibited at the University’s Reg Vardy Gallery.

Alastair MacLennan is well known as one of Britain’s major influential practitioners in live art for his performances and installation work to which he gave the name of ‘actuations’. However his drawing activity is less well known. With some exceptions, MacLennan’s drawings have been for the private exploration of ideas, for concentrating the mind. For meditation and reflection rather than exhibition. Some have found their way into private and public collections and into catalogues; but not many. It is therefore with much pleasure that Locus+ are able to exhibit these seldom seen works.
