NEPN Graduate Awards 2016

We would like to congratulate graduates Lydia Wakelam and Dreana Bulmer-Thompson who have each been awarded an NEPN Graduate Award 2016.  The awards are selected and awarded in partnership with the Northern Centre of Photography at the University of Sunderland.

Each award comprises:

  • £100 cash
  • £150 Travel Bursary
  • 2 critical support sessions with NEPN

Lydia Wakelam has been selected for the NEPN Graduate Award for Artistic Achievement in recognition of overall student artistic achievement and the quality of her final exhibition as part of her BA (Hons) Photography, Video & Digital Imaging at University of Sunderland.

Lydia’s work often draws on themes combining the personal and the universal; creating an intimate view of her subjects through which she projects her vision of our society, our planet, and an infatuation with the universe.

Her most recent series, They Ate It All Up, took a futuristic, retrospective viewpoint on the ongoing destruction of Earth caused by humans; entertaining the idea that one day we may move our species to another planet rather than accept responsibility and fix the one we have.

Dreana Bulmer-Thompson has been awarded the NEPN Graduate Networking Award in recognition of her critical engagement with a photographic network of peers and contribution to the visual arts community as an emerging photographer graduating from the BA(Hons) Photography, Video & Digital Imaging at University of Sunderland.

Using photography, text and multi-media Dreana explores a range of issues including politics, climate change and the environment, and looks at the impact they have on people’s lives and their livelihoods.

Her recent work, Heath’s Piscary, examined the impact of a declining fishing industry and the re-purposing of the North Shields Fish Quay and the surrounding area as a heritage and conservation site.
